As long as you have a Web connection, you can turn any PC (yes, even Macs) into a point-of-sale (POS) device and process transactions from nearly any location, established or virtual.

The way it typically works is you log into a payment gateway web site, such as authorize.net, and one of the choices or links you will see is a "virtual point of sale" or "VPOS." Once you click on the link you will see a form that resembles an order form you would see on amazon.com if you were ordering a book. Just entered the required data press enter and you are done. The VPOS will auto batch toward the end of the day and your funds will be in your bank account in 24-48 hours.

This is the leading payment gateway/VPOS product in North America. The interface is extreme user friendly. Authorize.net also offers extra services to prevent fraud, manage customer data, setup reoccurring payments and accept payments by check.

Skipjack Financial Services

This VPOS is very similar to the one above. However, the interface is not as user friendly. One nice feature that comes with the VPOS is a QuickBooks&trade plugin that allows you to run transactions from within QuickBooks&trade for no extra charge. Security is another strong point of this product.

Plug'npay

This payment gateway/VPOS is loaded with features and is nicely designed for ease of use. Some of the added features are ACH e-check, e-mail management, QuickBooks™ integration and sophisticated fraud protection.
