On this website we have broken up payment gateways and virtual point of sale terminals into two groups. However, in the real world, these two typically come together as a package deal. Therefore, we must explain what this website means by " payment gateway," here is our brief definition:

A payment gateway facilitates the transfer of information between a payment portal (such as a website or IVR service) and the Front End Processor.

So if you have a website, the gateway takes transactions information entered into your shopping cart and forwards that it to the front end processor for authorization.

Bottom line: if you want to accept payments on your website you must have a payment gateway.

This is the area when we end up working with a lot of web page designers and developers. The key is matching the preferred shopping cart with a gateway that it has been registered with. Some of our favorite gateways are:

Shift4

This is product is so much more than a gateway. Their security measures are top in the industry. This application allows merchants to audit sales data prior to settlement. It provides the ability to reduce cost of transactions by ensuring all the required data has been captured. This is a gateway on steroids and is our top choice.

Authorize.net

This is the leading payment gateway product in North America. Being so, many web developers are familiar with it. The interface is extremely user friendly. Offers extra services to prevent fraud, manage customer data, setup reoccurring payments and accept payments by check.

USA epay

We have been aware of this gateway for years but never had a reason work with them. Then we ran into some web designers who requested to have accounts set up with them. It turns out this gateway is extremely simple to integrate with most shopping carts. What we love is the low gateway fee with no transaction fees.

Comstar Interactive ComsGate™

Frankly, we have not worked much with this gateway. However, we have used this company's other products and if their gateway is half as good you will have yourself an excellent gateway. Their customer service is excellent, pricing fair and they sync with QuickBooks like no other product other market.

Plug'npay

This payment gateway/VPOS is loaded with features and is nicely designed for ease of use. Some of the added features are ACH e-check, e-mail management, QuickBooks™ integration and sophisticated fraud protection.

Skipjack Financial Services

This payment gateway is very similar to the one above. However, the interface is not as user friendly. One nice feature that comes with the VPOS is a QuickBooks™ plugin that allows you to run transactions from within QuickBooks™ for no extra charge. Security is another strong point of this product.
